What Educators are Saying

We regularly survey our teachers to ensure that our services meet their needs in the classroom. Last year, 91% of teachers said that the curriculum will lead to increased student achievement in reading. Additionally, leading educators such as Dr. Joanna Williams and David Levin have endorsed UEE (see sidebar on right).

Read below to see what classroom teachers and principals have to say about UEE’s services.

Teacher Testimonials

We know that, with UEE, we are investing in guidance and support for our teachers. Teachers need to be mentored over time to fully develop and improve their instructional skills. If we are truly going to make a difference in the lives of our students, we must attract and retain the very best teachers and UEE is the only organization we found that really understood that.
- Jody Visage, Principal of The Waterside School (Stamford, CT)

Out of the several literacy programs I have used, UEE has provided the best set of tools for teaching explicit comprehension strategies using authentic, engaging children's literature. After using UEE as the basis for guided reading at my last school, I knew I wanted to bring UEE's resources and tools to my current school. I would recommend UEE's program to any school with the mission of preparing students for success in college because of its focus on developing critical thinking skills.
- Literacy Specialist & TFA Alumna (New York, NY)

First of all, reading comprehension is incredibly difficult to teach, for anyone. It requires making what is implicit to us explicit to children, and that is very difficult. UEE has so many resources and does this better, and more thoroughly, than I could possibly do myself.
- First Year Teacher (Brooklyn, NY)

I use UEE to better enhance my focus, to provide more content-based exercises to individuals who need more practice, and to do more targeted planning instead of teaching haphazardly.
- Veteran Teacher (Albany, NY)

I will access the UEE website every time I write my weekly lesson plans, and then as I write my monthly units of study for ideas on lessons, assessments and additional resources. I am excited to use the suggested scope and sequence, because my school works with no curriculum and no literacy coach, so this resource changes the way I feel about teaching reading.

Endorsements

I have been working closely with UEE on their reading comprehension program [since 2003]. Reading for deep meaning is a complex task that is difficult to teach. I believe that UEE's explicit curriculum, along with its teacher training and assessments, has the elements that teachers and their students need to achieve success.

- Dr. Joanna Williams,
Professor of Psychology and Education
at Columbia University

Educating urban youth requires the perfect mixture of talent and tools. UEE is focused on the key levers for teacher excellence in the area of reading comprehension – a strong curriculum supported with intensive teacher training. And it doesn’t stop there. With UEE’s on-line curriculum, teachers can add extensions, make comments and build their knowledge base in a community of like-minded educators.
