Philosophy
In order to successfully overcome the language barriers that low-income, urban students face, successful reading comprehension programs must teach students inferential thinking skills, a broad knowledge base, and relevant, in-context vocabulary words. All of UEE’s curricular resources reinforce these 3 important building blocks. Click here to explore our research base.
UEE's Approach
The core of UEE’s reading curriculum is the Concepts of Comprehension© (Concepts©), a framework of 21 inferential thinking skills identified by UEE and confirmed by research as the most important skills for helping a child deeply understand what they are reading. The Concepts© offer teachers a framework for teaching these skills across all grade levels, building upon student knowledge from previous years. The framework is supported by numerous lessons and resources, including Weekly Reader Reading Passages, created in cooperation with the iconic children’s magazine. (See the 'Curriculum Sampler' at right for examples of our lessons and resources.)
